AMY
ZHAO

Amy Zhao sees herself as a see-saw: someone who balances “nerdiness” and “sociable”. Although she loves to learn new scientific concepts and explore solutions to mathematical problems, she cherishes her time spent volunteering, being a leader and meeting new people just as much. Global issues she cares about include lack of economic opportunity, societal polarization and biodiversity loss, and she approaches them from an interdisciplinary manner, with a focus on psychology.

My Story

Amy’s most important lesson is about balance. From her own experience, she has learned that working for countless hours nonstop is ineffective and hinders results.

In terms of her leadership capacity building, Amy has founded her own organization called Summit Networks, an alumni network that bridges the gap between high school aspirations and university realities. Additionally, she has been a part of her school’s Enviro Club for many years, and also leads the Debate and Math Challengers club. She is also a dedicated volunteer to the Red Cross organization, where she spends her time helping seniors in need. Outside of leadership and schoolwork, she enjoys solving competitive math problems and debating PF and impromptu at prestigious tournaments. Her passion for math has allowed her to complete AP Calculus BC, scoring a 5, at the tenth grade.

To develop her passion for education further, Amy would like to major in neuroscience to learn more about the human brain and its function. Her previous course experience in AP Psychology has not only taught her fundamental concepts, but began a lifelong journey of curiosity within the field.
